Microsoft Excel templates are a powerful part of Excel experience and a great way to save time. Once you've created a template, it will require only minor tweaks to suit your current purposes and therefore can be applied to different scenarios and reused time and time again. Excel templates can also help you create consistent and attractive documents that will impress your colleagues or supervisors and make you look your best. Templates are especially valuable for frequently used document types such as Excel calendars, budget planners, invoices, inventories and dashboards. What can be better than grabbing a ready-to-use spreadsheet that already has the look and feel you want and can be easily tailored for your needs? That's what a Microsoft Excel template is - a predesigned workbook or a worksheet where the main work has already been done for you, saving you from reinventing the wheel. What can be better than that? This is the reason why you may see the following notification asking if you trust the template's publisher. In case you do, click the Trust this app button. How to make a custom Excel template Making your own templates in Excel is easy. You start by creating a workbook in the usual way, and the most challenging part is to make it look exactly the way you want. It is definitely worth investing some time and effort both in the design and contents, because all formatting, styles, text and graphics you use in the workbook will appear on all new workbooks based on this template. In an Excel template, you can use save the following settings: • The number and type of sheets • Cell styles and formats • Page layout and print areas for each sheet • Hidden areas to make certain sheets, rows, columns or cells invisible • Protected areas to prevent changes in certain cells • Text that you want to appear in all workbooks created based on a given template, such as column labels or page headers • Formulas, hyperlinks, charts, images and other graphics • Excel Data validation options such as, validation messages or alerts, etc. • Calculation options and window view options, e.g. • Macros and ActiveX controls on custom forms Once you've created the workbook, you just need to save it as a.xlt or.xltx file (depending on which Excel version you use) instead of usual.xls or.xlsx. If you need the detailed steps, here you go: • In Excel 2010 and 2013, click File > Save As. In Excel 2007, click the Office button, and then Save as. • In the Save As dialogue, in the File name box, type a template name. • Under Save as type, select Excel Template (*.xltx) if you are using Excel 2013, 2010 or 2007. In earlier Excel versions, select Excel 97-2003 Template (*.xlt). If your workbook contains a macro, then choose Excel Macro-Enabled Template (*.xltm). When you select one of the above template types, the file extension in the File Name field changes to the corresponding extension. Please be aware that as soon as you choose to save your workbook as Excel Template (*.xltx), Microsoft Excel automatically changes the destination folder to the default templates folder, which is usually C: Users AppData Roaming Microsoft Templates If you want to save the template to some other folder, remember to change the location after selecting Excel Template (*.xltx) as the document type. At that, regardless of what destination folder you choose, a copy of your template will be saved to the default templates folder anyway. • Click the Save button to save your newly created Excel template. Now, you can create new workbooks based on this template and share it with other users. You can share your Excel templates in many ways, just like usual Excel files - e.g. Store a template in a shared folder or your local network, save it to OneDrive (Excel Online) or email as an attachment. How to find custom templates in Excel 2013 and 2010 It is not a big problem to pick any of the previously used templates in Excel 2010 and earlier versions - simply go to the File tab > New and click My templates. No one knows why Microsoft decided to discontinue this feature in Excel 2013, but the fact is that My templates do not show up in Excel 2013 by default. Where are my Personal Templates in Excel 2013? Some of Excel 2013 users might have been enjoying seeing the collection of templates suggested by Microsoft every time they open Excel. But what if you've always wanted YOUR templates and never what Microsoft recommends? Moreover, what if you made some nice templates in earlier versions and do want to see them again in your Excel after upgrading to version 2013? The good news is that the templates you created in earlier Excel versions are still there. Like in previous versions, Excel 2013 automatically stores a copy of each new template in the default templates folder. All you need to do is to bring the Personal tab back in your Excel 2013, and here's how. Method 1 - Create a custom template folder The easiest way to make the Personal tab appear in Excel 2013 is creating a special folder to store your Excel templates. • Create a new folder where you want to store your templates. You can create it in any location of your choosing, e.g. C: Users My Excel Templates • Set this folder as the default personal templates location. To do this, navigate to the File tab > Options > Save and enter the path to the templates folder in the Default personal templates location box: • Click the OK button and you are done. From now on, all custom templates you save to this folder will automatically appear under the Personal tab on the New page (File > New). As you see, this is a very quick and stress-free way. However, it does have a very significant limitation - every time you make a template in Excel, you do have to remember to save it into this particular folder. And this is the reason why I like the second approach better: ) Method 2 - Find Excel's default template folder Instead of creating a custom folder to store your personal Excel templates, you can find the one to which Microsoft Excel stores templates automatically and set it as Default personal templates location. Once you do this, you will find all newly created and downloaded templates as well as those you've created earlier on the Personal tab. • In Windows Explorer, go to C: Users AppData Roaming Microsoft Templates. Right-click the address bar, and then click Copy address as text. If you have difficulties with locating this folder, click Start and type (or even better copy/paste) the following command in the search box:%appdata% Microsoft Templates The Template folder will appear in search results, so you simply click on it and copy the path as explained above. • In Microsoft Excel, go to File > Options > Save and paste the copied path into the Default personal templates location box, exactly as we did in step 2 of. And now, whenever you click File > New in Excel 2013, the Personal tab is there and your custom Excel templates are available for use. Method 3 - Let Microsoft fix this for you It looks like Microsoft received so many complains about a mysterious disappearance of personal templates in Excel 2013, that they took a trouble to create a fix. The fix applies the solution described in automatically and is available for download. The main advantage of this approach is that it works for all Office 2013 applications, not only Excel, meaning you won't need to specify the default template location in each program individually. How to make a default template for Excel If among your Microsoft Excel templates there is one that you use most often, you may want to make it the default template and have it opened automatically on Excel start. Microsoft Excel allows creating two special templates - Book.xltx and Sheet.xltx - that are the basis for all new workbooks and all new worksheets, respectively. So, the key point is to decide which template type you want: • Excel Workbook template. This type of a template includes several sheets. So, create a workbook that contains the sheets you want, enter placeholders and default text (e.g. Page headers, column and row labels, and so on), add formulas or macros, apply styles and other formatting that you want to see in all new workbooks created with this template. • Excel Worksheet template. This template type assumes just one sheet. So, delete 2 of the default 3 sheets in a workbook and then customize the remaining sheet to your liking. Apply the desired styles and formatting and enter the information you want to appear on all new worksheets based on this template. Once you've decided on your default template type, proceed with the following steps. • In the workbook that you want to become your default Excel template, click File > Save As. • In the Save as type box, select Excel Template (*.xltx) from the drop-down list. • In the Save in box, select the destination folder for the default template. This should always be the XLStart folder, no other folder will do. In Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8, the XLStart folder usually resides in: C: Users AppData Local Microsoft Excel XLStart In Windows XP, it is usually located in: C: Documents and Settings Application Data Microsoft Excel XLStart • Finally, give the right name to your Excel default template: • If you are making the workbook template, type Book in the File name • If you are creating the worksheet template, type Sheet in the File name The following screenshot demonstrates the creation of the default workbook template: • Click the Save button to finish the process and close the window. And now, you can restart your Excel and see if it creates a new workbook based on the default template you've just set. Tip: How to quickly find the XLStart folder on your machine If you are not sure where exactly the XLStart folder is located on your machine, you can find it in two ways. • Trusted Locations In Microsoft Excel, go to File > Options, and then click Trust Center > Trust Center Settings: Click Trusted Locations, find the XLStart folder in the list and click on it. The full path to the folder will show up underneath the trusted locations list. Please note that the trusted location list actually contains two XLStart folders: • Personal folder. Use this folder if you want to make the default Excel template for your user account only. The usual location of the personal XLStart folder is: C: Users AppData Roaming Microsoft Excel XLStart • Machine Folder. Saving the xltx or Sheet.xltx template into this folder will make it Excel's default template for all users of a given machine. Saving a template to this folder requires the admin rights. The machine XLStart folder is typically located here: C: Program Files Microsoft Office XLSTART When copying the XLStart folder's path, please double check that you've picked the right one. • Visual Basic Editor An alternative way to spot the XLStart folder is by using the Immediate window in the Visual Basic Editor: • In Microsoft Excel, Press Alt+F11 to launch the Visual Basic Editor. • If the Immediate window is not visible, press Ctrl+G. • As soon as the Immediate window appears, type? Application.StartupPath, press Enter and you will see the exact path to the XLStart folder on your machine. As you see in the screenshot above, this method always returns the location of the personal XLSTART folder. Where to download Excel templates As you probably know, the best place to look for Excel templates is. Actually, these are the same templates that you see in your Excel when clicking File > New. Nevertheless, searching on site may work better, especially when you are looking for something specific. It's a bit strange that you can filter the templates either by application (Excel, Word or PowerPoint) or by category, not by both at a time, and still you should have no problems with finding the template you want: To download a particular Excel template, simply click on it. This will display a brief description of the template as well as the Open in Excel Online button. As you may expect, clicking this button creates a workbook based on the selected template in Excel Online. To download the template into your desktop Excel, click File > Save As > Download a Copy. This will open the familiar Windows' Save As dialog window where you select a destination folder and click the Save button. The downloaded file is a usual Excel workbook (.xlsx). If you'd rather want an Excel template, open the workbook and re-save it as Excel Template (*.xltx). Apart from Office.com, you can find plenty more web-sites offering free Excel templates. A company that size shouldn't have more than 1 or 2 (maximum) HR employees. If they do it is a salary waste from a business perspective. I mean HR should do payroll in a company that small, and then MAYBE have an assistant or part-time intern or something like that. Why waste the money when NorthWind is free and easily customizable. A little bit of elbow grease and you can save on the recurring monthly charges of these other companies. Just my suggestion. Now, If you expect to grow substantially (say to about 150 employees), then I would definitely consider Martin's alternatives. Just my opinion though. Not meaning to disagree Martin. Of course you disagree:) But I gotta disagree with you! Tracking payroll, benefits, 401K's, etc is a royal pain and often takes quite some time to do even with a system that already has all that in it. To take Northwind, which is really just a demonstration database that can be found in most Microsoft products, and try to build that up into a full HR system just doesn't make sense! Why hire an assistant? Instead, pay the $50-$150 a month for 1 or 2 licenses and just have someone else build the infrastructure. Then your HR person can keep their staff down, they don't have to worry about customizing a database themselves (and maybe getting it wrong). You can also keep printing costs down (printing MICR lines, or getting pre-printed checks is a pain), HR costs down--no need for an assistant to help with payroll--IT infrastructure costs down (no backups, no availability, no archiving--remember you gotta keep this data for YEARS--no DR plan, etc). A: Microsoft offers a number of free security tools. I've written about separately, but there are some others you might want to know about, such as the Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (MBSA), security templates, and the Security Configuration Wizard (SCW). Version 4.0 of the Security Compliance Manager (SCM) tool is now available for download! In addition to key features from the previous version, SCM 4.0 offers support for Windows 10 and Server 2016 baselines, and bug fixes. SCM enables you to quickly configure and manage computers. A: Microsoft offers a number of free security tools. I've written about the Microsoft Security Compliance Manager (SCM) separately, but there are some others you might want to know about, such as the Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (MBSA), security templates, and the Security Configuration Wizard. MBSA is a tool you can use to scan local or remote Windows computers for a fixed and limited amount of general security information, such as the presence of weak passwords, administrative vulnerabilities, and the status of security patches. MBSA's biggest shortcoming is its lack of customization: You can't add your own security scans to an MBSA run, and you can't create different MBSA scans for different machine types or roles. The latest version, MBSA 2.2, includes support for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 machines. Security templates are the oldest Microsoft security management tool; Microsoft first included them in Windows NT. Administrators can use security templates to configure the security-related settings of their Windows machines and deploy them by using Group Policy Object (GPO) settings. Thanks to their GPO integration, security templates let administrators configure security-related settings on different computers in a single effort. Security templates can cover the following security-related settings: account policies, audit policies, user rights, security settings, event log settings, restricted groups, system services, registry permissions, and file and folder permissions. Security templates can also be applied to individual local machines (one machine at a time) by using the Security Configuration and Analysis (SCA) tool or its command-line equivalent, secedit.exe. However, SCA and secedit require the creation of a special security database on each machine before you can actually use the tools to apply security template settings. SCW was Microsoft's first security management tool based on machine roles and a security configuration database. It was introduced in Windows Server 2003 SP1. Microsoft designed SCW to cover Windows firewall rules, network and authentication protocol, and audit security configuration settings on Windows servers. SCW policies can be applied only to Windows servers, not Windows desktops. Also, although the tool is wizard-driven, it isn't a straightforward process to create security policies with SCW and then deliver these policies to servers by using GPOs. SCW baseline policies can be imported into a GPO by using the scwcmd.exe command-line tool. SCM should become every security administrator's preferred security management tool for Windows clients and servers. Compared to these earlier tools, SCM is definitely Microsoft's most complete security management tool ever. The SCM security baselining capabilities can support different Windows machine roles and types. They also support a wide range of Microsoft OS versions and cover key applications such as Internet Explorer (IE) and Microsoft Office. SCM has an easy-to-use interface, is customizable, and integrates with other important Windows management tools such as GPOs and System Center Configuration Manager. Security Compliance Manager (SCM) is a tool that I find extremely useful, especially when preparing for a new Windows OS deployment. And best of all, it’s free! Included in SCM are Microsoft’s recommended baseline security configurations for just about all of their current Operating Systems, including both desktop and server OSes, as well as some of their flagship applications such as Internet Explorer and Office. You can review and modify these configurations directly in SCM, export the configuration to a GPO Backup folder (as well as to a.cab or.xlsm), and then use that export to create a Group Policy Object to be applied to the appropriate systems in your domain. I recently used this tool to create a security baseline GPO for Windows Server 2012 R2, so I’ll provide you with the basic steps that I used as a reference. Please take note that even though the baselines included in SCM are Microsoft’s recommended configurations for security hardening, many of the settings have the potential of having a negative impact on your systems’ performance and/or your ability to manage them. Because of this I highly recommend taking the time to carefully review and research each setting within a baseline to make sure it will not conflict with any existing policies or procedures in your environment, and making changes as needed. • Download and install. • In the left pane, expand Microsoft Baselines. • Expand the desired operating system or application version and then select a role. In my case I chose Windows Server 2012 and the basic Member Server Security Compliance role. • With the role selected, click on the Duplicate button in the right pane under the Baseline section. • Give the duplicate configuration a new name and modify the description if you wish and then click Save. • Your duplicate configuration will show up at the top of the left pane under Custom Baselines, above Microsoft Baselines. Click on it to open the configuration. • Take some time to carefully review the configuration settings included in the baseline in the center of the window. You can make changes as needed by clicking on the setting and then modifying the options shown. • When you’re finished making any necessary changes, export the configuration by clicking on the GPO Backup (folder) link in the right pane. Be sure to save it somewhere accessible from the system where you manage your domain group policies. • Open up the Group Policy Management console and connect to your domain. • Under Forest -> Domains -> MyDomain -> Group Policy Objects, create a new Group Policy Object and name it according to your organization’s GPO naming convention. If you don’t have one, I recommend basing the name off of the baseline configuration you created to distinguish it and make it easier to find, e.g. Windows Server 2012 Security Baseline. • Once created, right-click on the new GPO and click Import Settings • When the Import Settings Wizard appears click Next. • If you’re attempting to import the configuration settings into an existing GPO rather than with a newly created one, I recommend using the next screen to create a backup of the GPO first. Otherwise, since there are no existing settings to overwrite, click Next > to continue. • Browse to the location of the GPO Backup folder that you exported from SCM earlier and then click Next. • The wizard should detect the baseline in the backup folder and list it in the next window. Click on it and then click Next. • You may get a warning that the backup contains UNC paths. Select Copying them identically from the source and then click Next. • Click Finish to complete the import. And there you go, you now have a Group Policy Object containing the recommended baseline security settings for your product. From here you can begin linking the GPO to your OUs as needed. I would highly recommend using security filtering and/or a WMI filter to make sure the GPO is only applied to a few select test systems until you’ve gauged how the new settings will impact your environment. To use my recent experience as an example, I created a security group in Active Directory named Windows Server 2012 GPO Testing, added a single test server to this group, and then added the group to my baseline GPO’s Security Filtering (make sure you also remove Authenticated Users). To be extra careful, I also created a new WMI filter to only return Windows Server 2012 R2 Member Servers and added this to my GPO as well. These help to ensure that my policy will only be applied to servers which are members of my security group, are running Windows Server 2012 R2, and are not domain controllers, regardless of the OU that I link the policy to in my Active Directory structure. If you want to create your own custom WMI filter, the process is very simple. • Open the Group Policy Management console and expand Forest -> Domains -> MyDomain -> WMI Filters. • Right-click the WMI Filter container and click New. • Name the new filter appropriately. In my case, I named it Windows Server 2012 Member Server ONLY. Add a description to help others know exactly what your filter does. • Click the Add button to create a new query. • You can leave the namespace as root CIMv2 and then enter your custom query. To find and return only Windows Server 2012 R2 Member Servers, I used the following query: select * from Win32_OperatingSystem where Version like “6.3%” and ProductType=”3″ • When finished click Save. • You can now use this filter for any GPO that you wish, simply by using the drop-down at the bottom of the Scope tab (same place where you set Security Filtering) For some help creating your own WMI filters, check out the links below. What you should really be basing your budget on is your actual take-home pay each month. For instance, if you make $50,000 annually as a salary - or around $4,200 per month - you need to take into account your income tax, benefits, pension plan, and other costs that you're paying that get docked off your monthly checks. Because of all these other hidden expenses, using $4,200 as a basis for your budget really isn't accurate. It's probably closer to $3,000, and maybe even less. It's crucial that you know exactly how much is coming in every month, because that's the figure you'll be basing your budget around. Using a free budget template can help you easily keep tabs on your finances. Get a Handle on Accurate Numbers When it Comes to Monthly Spending It's best to work with real numbers when coming up with a solid budgeting plan. This involves keeping every receipt after every purchase, and tallying up how much you're really spending. Your first budget essentially reflects how much you're spending on average every month. In addition to regular bills, don't forget to include all your irregular spending too, such as driver's license renewals, property taxes, property insurance, and so forth. These bills should really be planned for throughout the year, and not necessarily considered 'surprise' expenses. Have an Easy-To-Use Budgeting Tool on Hand If you're starting off your budget using a complicated tool, you can quickly and easily become overwhelmed by its complexity and the myriad of options available. This will cause you to more than likely throw in the towel when it comes to keeping up with your budget. Your first budget should really be easy to manage and keep up with to help you get a handle on your finances. Using a simple, free budget template is recommended, which is basically like an online version of the paper-and-pencil type. While there are a number of great options out there, many of them can become too complicated - the more confused you are about the tool you're using, the less likely you'll keep up with your budget because it's 'just too complicated.' Don't let this happen to you. Instead, stick to simple tools, especially when you're just starting out. Use a Budgeting Tool Specific to Your Situation Depending on what phase of life you're in, you'll want to use a budget template that's catered to your situation. For instance, college students may have a completely different budget than a newly married couple. Click here to download the XLS file. Download a simple project scheduling tool for Microsoft® Excel® - by Jon Wittwer, PhD A Gantt chart is a tool for project management developed originally by Henry Gantt in the early 1900s. It is a type of bar chart that shows the start and end times for each task in a project schedule. The tasks are usually categorized using a work breakdown structure with summary tasks for the main project deliverables and sub-tasks that break the project down into a detailed and manageable task hierarchy. If you use Excel or Google Sheets, you can create this type of project schedule with almost no learning curve by downloading Vertex42's free Gantt Chart Template. Description This template contains the core functionality needed to create a simple Gantt chart easily. Each row of the worksheet represents a separate task. All you need to do is define the start date and duration of each task. • To add more tasks, you just copy and paste rows (or insert a row then press Ctrl+d to copy formulas down). • To change the range of dates displayed in the chart area, just slide the scroll bar. • To track the status of a task, edit the% Complete column. The bars in the chart show the% complete for each task. • The vertical red line shows the current date. You can use the TODAY() function in the Today's Date field to automatically move the red line. • The Start and End dates for a Summary (Level 1) task can be found by using the MIN and MAX functions, such as MIN(range_of_start_dates) or MAX(range_of_end_dates). • To use the automatic numbering, copy the formula for the appropriate level from the bottom of the worksheet. While planning a project, you may also want to use a or worksheet. Currently, the only template I have so far that uses the Critical Path Method (CPM) algorithm to show critical tasks and available float time is the shown in the image on the left. The Gantt chart in this example shows the critical tasks in red and the available slack time in gray. The CPM algorithm requires a fully defined task dependency structure, meaning that every task must have a successor (another task that depends on it). A simple Gantt chart may not need to have the dependencies between tasks fully defined, which is why you will see many project schedules with tasks defined only with a start and end date. =WORKDAY( end_date,1) Use the WORKDAY.INTL() function in Excel 2010+ to define a custom work week (days other than only Sat & Sun) The problem with only using formulas is that you can't see the dependencies between tasks when you view or print the chart. Other Gantt chart software may show dependencies as lines connecting the bars in the gantt chart, but I've never found a simple way for Excel to do that (and the lines can get really messy). The simple approach is to list the WBS number of the Predecessor in another column, like in the critical path example above. In the CPM template and in Gantt Chart Template Pro, formulas calculate the start dates based on what you enter. If you want to try doing this on your own, here is a formula to get you started: 4. Start a Task the next day after a Predecessor task listed in another column. Commercial Gantt Chart Software There are hundreds of software applications for creating gantt charts and project schedules. Some of the most popular are those that allow easy online collaboration such as SmartSheet.com and ProjectManager.com. And of course there's Microsoft: • - products.office.com - Although a bit pricey, this really is the ultimate software for creating gantt charts and project timelines, partly because it is widely used and you can probably find someone in your office that knows how to use it if you have questions. Other Free Gantt Chart Spreadsheets • - vertex42.com - This worksheet may be useful if you want to avoid formulas and just want a way to create a stylish project timeline. • - John Peltier explains how to create a gantt chart in Excel using stacked bar graphs. • by James Chapman - This page includes a few free gantt chart downloads for Excel that also calculate spend plan.
